Special interview with Pernille Ørum
Pinup Arena: Hi, Please Tell us a little bit about yourself, Where are you from? Where did you go to school?, What inspired you to become an Artist?
Pernille Ørum: My name is Pernille Ørum and I’m from Denmark, currently living in Copenhagen where I work for the game company, SYBO Games. I studied animation at The Animation Workshop in Viborg, DK, and graduated in 2011.
When I was a kid I always drew and watched animated film, especially Disney. That’s where I got most of my inspiration, that and comics. I always knew that I wanted to work in animation, ever since I saw The Little Mermaid in ’89.
Pinup Arena: Which software do you use? please describe the process.
Pernille Ørum: I use Adope Photoshop CC and have a wacom Cintiq. I usually play around with rough sketches in photoshop, or scan in a sketchbook drawing. Currently I work without outline and with one gouache-like brush. I put in a base colour, and create a ‘clipping mask layer’ where I render in the drawings details and shadows. I find it to be a loose and fun way to work. As a finish I like to put in a coloured multiplied gradient layer. It creates a nice feel.
Pinup Arena: What is your most favorite subject to draw? And why?
Pernille Ørum: I like to play around with different things, however I always find myself drawing girls in my free time. They are interesting in shape, and trying to convey a mood or style is also fun.
Pinup Arena: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Pernille Ørum: I get it from many places. People I see on the street, fashion magazines and sites. I always have a folder full of pictures for drawings I wish to do at some point. I also draw inspiration from other artists. The collaborations and communities online of talented people is very inspiring and motivating.
Pinup Arena: Please tell us about your past and current projects
Pernille Ørum: I work full-time in a game company, but have illustration jobs and projects on the side. I’m working on a personal project where I hope to have enough stuff to be able to make a little self-published book for online and festival sale. I’m trying to get it together by the end of the year. I’m also being published over the summer in a danish fashion magazine, Euroman.
